Imposter Syndrome Anyone?
How many of you have heard of imposter syndrome?
Imposter syndrome is that feeling of doubt, the voice inside that tells you, "Who am I to be here? Do I really deserve this?" I hadn’t even heard of it until I was in Montana for advanced Energy Medicine Yoga Training. But once I learned about it, I realized it was something I’d been carrying with me for a long time.
I bet many of you have felt this way too. Whether it’s in your job, your relationships, or even in your yoga practice, we all have moments where we question if we’re enough. Maybe you’ve looked at others in class and thought, "I’ll never be as flexible or as strong as them." Or maybe in life, you’ve wondered, "Who am I to be doing this?"
That feeling is universal. But here’s the thing: we’re all on our own journey. I’ve spent years giving advice to others, but I realized that when it comes to taking my own advice, it’s a lot harder. How many of you have found it easier to tell others what they should do but struggle to apply it to yourself? It’s part of being human.
Now, here’s the sad part—I’m a yoga teacher, and I had a stroke. Talk about a curveball! Yoga is supposed to be about health, wellness, and balance, right? So when I had the stroke, it made me question everything. Who am I to teach others about health when I’ve experienced such a major health setback myself?
But here’s what I learned: life doesn’t always go the way we plan. And that’s okay. The irony isn’t lost on me that I am a yoga teacher who had a stroke, but the stroke is slowly becoming one of the greatest teachers in my life. It reminded me that yoga and life isn’t about perfection, it’s about resilience. It’s about how we show up for ourselves and others, even when things go sideways.
Some of you might be going through your own challenges right now. Maybe it’s not a stroke, but maybe you’re dealing with a health issue, a relationship change, or something else that feels out of your control. I want to remind you that while those moments feel overwhelming, they offer us opportunities to evolve and grow.
I even tried to give up donuts—trust me, that didn’t go well at first! But it got me thinking about how change is hard for all of us. We often want other people in our lives to change, but when it comes to ourselves, it’s not so easy. Have you ever felt that? Like you know what you need to do but aren’t ready? I’ve been there. But once you decide to change, things can fall into place. Sometimes the hardest part is just making that decision. I FINALLY made the decision, something ‘clicked’ and I did it.
Yoga teaches us about resilience—not just in our bodies, but in our minds. It’s about showing up for ourselves, especially when life doesn’t go as planned. That’s why we’re here on our mats: not to perfect the poses, but to grow into who we’re meant to be.
So as you go abuot your day, think about where you’re carrying self-doubt or where you feel stuck in your own life. Know that you’re not alone. Each of us is working through something, and just like in yoga, it’s not about perfection—it’s about progress. You are enough, right now, just as you are. And that’s more than enough.
